If you’re feeling intimidated by the job hunting process, you’re not alone. Job hunting can be a challenging endeavor for anyone, no matter how qualified they might be.

The job market is fiercely competitive. While employers are sifting through endless applications and resumes, they’re looking for candidates that stand out from the rest. This means that you need to make a strong first impression with potential employers before you even meet them. A great way to capture the attention of a potential employer is with a well-written cover letter.

Katherine Anderson, the Career Service Manager here at the REDC, helps job seekers put their best foot forward when applying for jobs. Here's what she has to say about the importance of cover letters:

"Job seekers should always include a cover letter unless the job posting specifically states otherwise. It’s your chance to show why you’re the ideal candidate and how your experiences connect with the company’s mission. A cover letter is also a great way to address career changes, gaps in work history, or other unique circumstances in a positive and professional manner."

Let’s take a deep dive into how you can craft a cover letter that sets you apart from the competition.

How to Write a Cover Letter—Crafting a Professional Cover Letter From Start to Finish

Cover letters are an important part of a strong job application. They allow you to appeal to potential employers by highlighting the reasons why you’d be a good fit for the role. A well-crafted cover letter conveys professionalism, individualism, and enthusiasm for the job.

To write a cover letter that will help you stand out from the competition, you need to do your research. Your cover letter should speak directly to each individual employer, showcasing the strengths that align perfectly with their company’s values.

After thoroughly researching the company and job you’re applying for, you’ll be able to tailor your cover letter accordingly. While maintaining a professional tone, express your excitement for the position and why you would make an excellent candidate for hire.

What’s the Best Way to Begin a Cover Letter?

Before you write your cover letter, you need to craft a professional heading. The heading goes at the top of your cover letter, so it’s usually the first thing an employer will see. To craft a professional heading, include your name and contact information, followed by your employer’s name and their contact information.

After you’ve crafted a professional heading, you can begin writing the introduction to your cover letter. Starting your cover letter with a compelling introduction is a great way to immediately capture an employer’s attention.

To write a compelling introduction, express your interest in the job position, mention how you heard about the role, and communicate your enthusiasm for their specific company. You can also briefly explain how your expertise and passion for the industry will make you a great fit for the role. No image. What Should a Cover Letter Say?

The bulk of your cover letter should explain why you’re the best candidate for the job position. To do this effectively, write brief paragraphs that highlight your professional skills, expertise, and accomplishments. Whenever you’re discussing your qualifications, make sure you’re directly linking them with the company and job you’re applying for.

Now that you’ve written the body paragraphs of your cover letter, it’s time to finish strong with an effective conclusion paragraph. To conclude your cover letter, you should thank the reader for their time, indicate that you’re interested in an interview, and express that you’re looking forward to discussing your application further.

Similar to other letters, you should always complete your cover letter with a cordial closing statement. To do this, simply write “Sincerely,” or “Best regards,” followed by your full name.

How Do You Write a Cover Letter For an Internship?

When writing a cover letter for an internship position, you should:

  • Express your desire to learn and grow
  • Discuss academic courses, projects, and skills that relate to the industry
  • Convey enthusiasm and excitement about the learning opportunity
  • Communicate your career goals and how the internship would help you achieve them

Employers usually look for interns that are professional, driven, and passionate about the industry. A well-crafted cover letter is an effective way to convey that you’re exactly what they’re looking for.

How Do You Write a Cover Letter With No Experience?

Cover letters can help you break into an industry, even if you don’t have prior experience. When you don’t have relevant experience to offer, you should shift the focus towards the relevant soft skills you have instead.

Some important soft skills that can help you in any industry include teamwork, adaptability, and the ability to learn quickly. In addition to discussing your transferable soft skills, you should also express your interest in the company and your enthusiasm to learn and grow.
