## Drone Photography - $42,000 (Average)

Photos taken from drones are gorgeous and impossible to replicate from the ground.

Drone photographers are responsible for taking photos of landscapes, land parcels, events, and everything in between. They’ll also use software to edit photos to match their creative vision.

On its own, drone photography won’t generate a lot of income. That’s why most drone photographers will also offer videography.

## Drone Videographer - $63,000 (Average)

Drone videographers are in a very similar bucket to drone photographers. The most basic responsibility of drone videographers is to shoot videos using a drone, but there is a lot more to the job.

Drone videos can range from simple landscapes to complex flythroughs of office spaces. Depending on the kinds of videos you want to make, you’ll need to skill-up your flying technique.

Some jobs may require you to shoot only raw footage, but most videographers are also responsible for:

* Storyboarding
* Shooting footage
* Editing

Most small business drone videographers are also editors and creative directors. They are responsible for talking with clients, understanding their vision, and creating a video that matches that vision.

Drone mapping is a new kind of drone application that uses 2D images to create 3-dimensional maps. This kind of software is very commercial-focused; using it can be challenging and paying for it is even more challenging.

That being said, drone mapping is a kind of job that businesses will employ someone for.  Many industrial construction businesses or large-scale operations can afford to hire drone technicians and site mappers.

This job is primarily used in the postal and delivery industry, but it’s always growing. Some ideas of where delivery with drones can go include moving important tools or goods across working yards or factories.


## General Drone Pilot - $60,000 (Average)

Drone pilot is a general catch-all term for people who work with drones. There are a lot of roles these professionals can fill:

* Insurance claims assessment
* Emergency response situations
* Crop assessment
* Search and rescue operations
* City planning and infrastructure inspection
* Construction monitoring
* Delivery

Drone pilots can step in for situations where helicopters or planes can’t. Salary ranges widely and these roles are often employment opportunities. If you decide to create your own business and do contract work, you may be able to pick some of these jobs up.

## How to Get a Job as a Drone Pilot

If you’re looking for a job as a pilot, it’s safe to assume you’ve already had some practice flying a drone. You should keep practicing flying to get your skills to where they need to go.

However, there is a lot more you can do to prepare yourself and find drone jobs.

### Get Certified

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the regulatory body for drone flying. Before anyone can legally make money flying a drone, they need to be certified with a Part 107 license.

The process of receiving this license includes a background check and a robust test. Earning your Part 107 license is challenging, but there are many resources to help you study.

### Find a Drone Job or Start a Business

You should choose whether or not you want to find a job as a drone pilot or start a business of your own. With a job, you can work in construction, mining, and break into bigger industries. These jobs use drones that are different from consumer types.

Starting your own drone business gives you the ability to do what you want, how you want it, but you won’t have access to larger or more technical drone applications.

Looking for a job, especially while unemployed or underemployed, is stressful and daunting. There are so many online job boards and half the listings either seem fake or are actually fake.

No matter the percentage or figures, everyone agrees that networking is crucial for finding and building a career. Also, you can always network to feel unstuck; you never know what opportunities await. 

Use these tips to find meaningful connections that will actually lead to employment and professional opportunities.

## 1. Solidify What You’re Looking For

“What are you looking for in a relationship?” is a common question to ask on a date, but have you considered that question for your career? Having a clear understanding of what you want professionally will help you make the connections that will lead to meaningful work.

This is difficult for people who are breaking into a new career or just graduating from college. Consider tasks you enjoy and look around at job postings. Chances are, there are common entry-level positions you could be pursuing.

## 2. Reach Out

You can’t network without putting yourself out there at least a little bit. You don’t need to treat this process like a sales pitch. We’ve all gotten the MLM invites from high school classmates—don’t be like them.

Reach out for networking opportunities in as many ways as possible.

* LinkedIn direct message
* Cold calls
* Emailing the company directly
* Attending events

If you have someone’s phone number, give them a text or call, if your only point of contact is LinkedIn, send them a message. In some cases, you don’t even need to have a point of contact. Most businesses have a contact form on their site. It might have a general purpose, but you can still put a bug in their ear by messaging them this way.
### Be Intentional

When reaching out, don’t neglect the people working the job you want. You can glean a lot of insight from them.

Being intentional about who you’re reaching out to means finding people in a position similar to what you’d like to have or a workplace that you want to be a part of. It also means finding the people who are hiring for those positions.
### Start Small

You never know who knows who. A connection you currently have could be connected to someone who could help you break into your dream job. Ask the people you’re already connected with:

* Current coworkers and supervisors
* Past employers or professors
* People you went to school with

### Be Authentic

Networking isn’t about selling yourself; it’s about making meaningful professional connections.

Be authentic and honest about what you’re looking for, your skills, and how you can fit into their team. Your personality should shine, but don’t downplay your experience.


### Be Curious

When you do reach out, do so with a genuine curiosity about how you can help their business. 

Learn more about their business and what they’re trying to accomplish. If you don’t see a way you can help them achieve their goals, encourage them and reach out to people in your network who could be helpful.


## 3. Meet In Person

Connecting online might not be enough—get out of your comfort zone and try to meet in person.

Meeting face-to-face while networking improves your ability to communicate yourself to potential employers, mentors, or connections. Ask if they can meet at a local coffee shop so you can ask them questions.

## 4. Talk Less

While on a call or meeting over coffee, let the other people talk more than you. This means you’ll be asking the questions so think ahead of time about some of the things you want to know about what the person does and how their job operates.

## 5. Attend Events

There are two ways you can think about while attending a job fair:

* What jobs are available
* Who will be attending

While you could go into the fair hoping to find the job you’re looking for, consider approaching it as networking first.

Talk with the business leaders that are present and find out more about what they do. Are there any pain points they currently face? What kinds of customers do they serve? Be curious about what they do, let them talk, ask questions, and try to make friends.

When you approach a fair like that, hiring managers might just create a job for you.

## 6. Provide Help

You can create meaningful connections with people by offering help or insight with small tasks. This could be contracted work, a super simple task, or insight. 

Don’t offer to work for free, but small things here and there will prove your skills to potential employers.

## 7. Invest in the Long-Term

You may be networking specifically to find a job now, but there are more benefits to networking than the immediate results. If you have a network of professionals and job creators, you’ll be able to tap into that any time you need to find a job down the road, get job advice, land a client for your business, or want to refer a friend. 

Networking is all about making connections, and the value of those connections compounds over time. So, don’t only look for the immediate. Try to find long-term relationships you can build over time.


## 8. Stay Connected

Everyone is busy. If you’re waiting a long time to hear back from someone, they likely forgot. Shoot them another email to remind them you exist.

Persistence goes a long way when looking for a job and meaningful networking opportunities. Sometimes it takes a long time to get your foot into the door. Don’t give up, but don’t be desperate. Send gentle reminders that you can’t wait to meet with them.

Once connections are made, don’t let them go stale. Check up on the people in your network through simple DMs or comments on their posts.

How to Network for a Job: Your Guide to Making Meaningful Connections

Technical writers deliver important and complex information with clarity. They take complicated concepts and long procedures and make them digestible for the regular person. They are typically well-versed in their field, but not always.

When a company needs to explain something to a general audience or create a concise guide for employees, they turn to technical writers to get the job done.

There is a learning curve to technical writing, but it can be a lucrative and fulfilling career.

Here’s what you need to start a career in technical writing.

## Education And Training Required for Technical Writing

Getting a bachelor’s degree in journalism, writing, or anything related to language will help you on your journey toward technical writing. However, it’s not a requirement.

Many technical writers have a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) degree with some communications training. Others often have communications or writing degrees with STEM training. 

But once, again, these aren’t requirements—different employers may have different education requirements for different technical writing jobs.

Writing is as much a language to learn as it is a skill to hone. Technical writers not only understand grammar and how to use language, but they write concisely.

Technical writers either start as writers or start in a specific technical field like:

* Construction
* Engineering
* Aerospace

When you get started, you’ll likely enter as a junior technical writer. You’ll also be working in a team and possibly with a lot of guidance.

After cutting your teeth for a while you’ll be able to move up from a junior position into overseeing teams of writers. However, many technical writers eventually break out of writing and into other fields or executive roles. Especially the field they are writing for.

## Find Your Niche

Most technical writers have specific niches in which they work. They may have found their niche through formal education or through years of experience.

Finding your niche as a technical writer may take time, but you should consider any interests you have in:

* Education and training
* Cybersecurity and data science

When getting started in any career it’s important to get connected. Most jobs get filled by people who know someone. Get to know people.

There are always some kind of event happening in the tech industry. Get connected to the people you’ll be working with by attending as many events as possible. This includes:

## Gather Writing Samples

Creating writing samples kills two birds with one stone:

* You’ll be getting better at writing
* You’ll be building a portfolio to show potential employers

Build up your resume with sample guides, white papers, and standard operating procedures. You may not be able to write a complete guide on how to fly an airplane, but you can choose smaller things you’ve done in real life.

You can create a technical writing portfolio without any experience by writing about things you’ve done or finding independent developers that could use help with documentation. Examples of technical writing samples include:

* How to set up a modem and router
* A guide to sideloading custom applications onto Android devices
* A tutorial on a hobby
* Documentation for bug fixes for an application

You’ll get bonus points with hiring managers if your samples are related to the industry you want to work in.

## Learn the Types of Technical Writing

Technical writing is used for a lot of things in a lot of different industries. There is not a single approach and it can be adapted for various industries. When you start a career in technical writing, you won’t need to know how to write for each of these categories, but you should at least know how these work.

While building out a portfolio and considering what niche you want to fill, consider these different types of technical writing.


### Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

SOPs explain how to perform a task or procedure. This includes medical procedures, construction instruction, communication guidelines, and new-hire training.

Having an SOP in place helps businesses stay consistent, compliant, safe, and efficient.

When writing an SOP, it’s important to write concisely and follow a step-by-step format. Any excess language should be cut so readers can easily access the steps they need to follow.

### White Papers and Case Studies

White papers inform readers about a problem and provide a proposed solution. These papers are usually created to inform potential customers about how a business can fulfill its goals.

These are important for thought leadership and showcase a business’ expertise. 

Case studies are similar to white papers, but explain how the businesses found solutions for a client.
### Business Proposals

Business proposals try to convince potential clients to purchase a product or service. They can also be used to pitch new business ideas to investors.

These documents are typically very structured and include:

* **An executive summary**: What the plan will cover
* **Problem statement**: Challenges or issues the business is proposing to address
* **Solution**: How the business plans to address the problem
* **Project overview**: Cost, scope, and timeline of the project
* **Pricing**: How much the project would cost

A business proposal is important for bringing new clients to businesses. As a technical writer, it’s your job to make sure the business is being conveyed correctly and concisely.
### Technical Documentation & End-User Instructions

Technical documentation is vital for developers. It explains how a product, service, or application works, how it was created, and what to use it for. It also explains the architecture of complex systems. 

This kind of documentation can also include release notes, troubleshooting guides, and setup processes. A big category of technical documentation includes software development and application programming interface (API) documentation. 

End-user instructions are important customer-facing documentation that explains a product or service. It’s important that these documents are well-written and easy to read. The end-user might not be well-versed in the product.

### Reports, Studies, and Research Results

There is a lot of data floating around the business world. Technical writers are often tasked with taking that data and presenting it in a clear and understandable way.

Technical writers aren’t typically involved in the creation of surveys, experiments, or data collection. However, they should be heavily involved in the process so they can present the findings in a distilled and structured way.

These projects are big undertakings and may require months of work. The writers may be asked to incorporate graphs, build appendixes, translate complex jargon, and include data analysis.

However you do it, having your tasks organized in a logical way will keep you from having to make decisions about what to do next and clear your mind for actually getting the work done.

More Than a Tidy Desk: Why Organizational Skills Help You at Work

Drones are growing in popularity and are great tools for photography, videography, and just having fun!

Drone photography gives photographers a new perspective and way to shoot photography. As far as the cost of camera equipment, drones can be surprisingly cheap comparatively. That being said, it’s a great piece of equipment that will unlock new and interesting ways to capture photos.

In this article, we’ll give 7 tips for improving your drone photography skills.

## 1. Check Local Regulations
Before you start flying your drone, make sure you follow local regulations. There are a lot of [resources with the FAA for beginner drone pilots](https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started) that lay out what these rules are. Here are some of the federal regulations to follow while flying a drone for recreational purposes:

* Stay at or below 400 ft
* Give way to other aircraft
* Fly only for recreation
* Keep your drone within in sight
* Do not fly in a dangerous manner

Though the municipality you are flying in may have other rules you need to comply with. You should also make sure the area you want to fly in allows drone flight. 
## 2. Find a Beginner Friendly Drone
You may already have a drone to take photos on, but if you don’t, you’ll need to find one.

Because you’re just getting started you don’t need to spend a ton of money on a drone. The best beginner drone for photography doesn’t need all the bells and whistles, but the quality of the camera is important. 

Most drone photography is used for big landscapes or sweeping vistas. If the camera quality is low, landscapes will look choppy.

Online reviews say the [DJI mini 3](https://store.dji.com/product/dji-mini-3?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA9IC6BhA3EiwAsbltOE_vhNMi-gsLhpyH1-il_nW6HGYzp28XwLjp19NaZPyGp9lNGB44kxoCrz8QAvD_BwE&vid=128001) is the best starter drone. When compared to other drones, it’s a great deal at under $500.

Our expert drone photographer, REDC's own Corey Carlson, spent a long time looking for a great first drone. Ultimately he settled on the DJI Mini 3 (the 4 hadn’t come out yet, but he would have gotten that one if it did).

## 3. Choose the Right Image Format
Almost every image shared on the internet is in the JPEG format. It’s an incredibly common image format, and for good reason. JPEGs have a low file size but are somewhat compressed. They look fine as is, but if you want to edit them you may lose more detail.

On the other hand, RAW images capture all the data from the camera sensor. This makes their file size a lot bigger and makes it easier to edit post shoots. 

Many would advocate for shooting in both RAW and JPEG. However, depending on your available storage, this could become unruly. Others advocate for shooting in JPEG and just honing in the best settings during the shoot.

Corey had this to say about image format: “I try to shoot in the highest resolution possible since storage is so cheap. For photos, it really depends on the shot and feel that I’m going for. Most likely I’m shooting at the highest definition though regardless.”

As a beginner drone photographer, shooting in RAW will give you a greater margin of error and make it easier to fix photos later.

## 4. Shoot in Manual
Auto settings can be very helpful when you’re in a pinch, but shooting in manual will help you learn your drone better and improve your photo shooting skills. Once you get the hang of it, shooting in manual will unlock more creative opportunities.

Learning how to shoot drone photography manually can be a difficult process. However, many of the concepts are exactly the same as shooting with a traditional camera. Here’s what you need to know:

* **Shutter speed**: How quickly the shutter stays open. This affects how much light comes in and how moving objects are captured. Fast shutter speed will be darker but fast moving objects won’t appear as blurry.
* **Aperture**: This setting changes the size of the aperture. Think of it as the pupil of the camera. This affects how much light enters and the focal length. The higher the number, the wider the aperture, the brighter the photo, and the smaller the focal length. This setting is less important for drones and some drones don’t allow it to be changed.
* **ISO**: This changes how sensitive the sensor is to light. It affects the brightness and noise level of the photo. As the ISO gets higher the picture gets brighter and noisier.

Balancing these settings is the game of shooting with manual settings. Set the shutter speed too fast and the image will be too dark, but the subject will be frozen in time. Slow down the shutter speed too much and the entire photo will be a blurry mess.

When you start shooting manual photography with your drone, a good rule of thumb is to keep the ISO at 100. Adjust shutter speed, and aperture if you can, around what you’re trying to shoot.

## 5. Consider Composition
Shooting random pictures isn’t the best way to create compelling photography. Before you start shooting willy-nilly, learn a bit about composition.

Composition is the arrangement of visual elements within a photo. A tree, a person, a distant building. How you place these elements within the photo is important for creating a good looking photo.

There are different ways to compose a shot. These are the most common:

* **The rule of 3rds**: This is the simplest composition method. Imagine a 3x3 grid over the frame. Now place the subject or point of interest on one of the intersecting lines. This method is simple but effective. Some cameras even come prebuilt with 3rd guides built in.
* **Framing**: Create a natural frame for your subject to live in. This style can lead to interesting photos and give a “picture within a picture” look to the photo. Framing can be used along any other method of composition. 
* **Leading lines**: This might be the most complex way to compose a photo. Essentially, it requires photographers to observe the natural lines and patterns within a scene and use those to direct the viewer's eyes to the subject. This can be used to create images with a great sense of movement.
* **Try something new**: When shooting a subject try shooting from different angles and find new ways to view the subject. Iteration is key in the creative process so keep shooting even if you think you have the shot you want.

Being mindful of composition means you'll be on your way to taking interesting photos that go beyond a typical picture.

## 6. Practice, Practice, Practice
Drone photography requires skills for both photography and drone flying.

Practice flying your drone and hone your skill. The better you are at flying your drone, the better you’ll be at finding the perfect angle and taking pictures you’re proud of. 

There is a lot of advanced tech built into drones that make it easier to fly. However, being reliant on advanced flying tech won’t make you better at flying. Instead, practice flying in controlled spaces to improve your directional awareness and skill at flying.

There are a ton of exercises you can try to improve your drone flying skills including:

* Target practice
* Square pattern with no yaw
* Square pattern with yaw
* Out back and land

Corey started his drone flying journey through trial and error. However, he said that YouTube tutorials from the Pilot Institute and others are a great starting point.
## 7. Get Certified
This might not be necessary for you, but if you’re interested in making money using your drone photography, an FAA Part 107 certificate is a must. However, if you only want to take photos recreationally, this isn’t for you.

Receiving your FAA Part 107 certification is a multi-step process that can last anywhere between 4-6 weeks. Those steps include:

* Study
* Take and pass test at a local center
* Apply for the license on the FAA website

You don’t need to show flight proficiency, but it does test knowledge of everything relating to drone flight. 

When asked if the FAA Part 107 certification is helpful, Corey said this: “Yes. It is definitely helpful to get Part 107 certified. Even if you’re flying a drone less than 250g. Just understanding the rules and regulations makes flying much more comfortable and safer in my opinion!”
